About the Job
The SMC Maintenance Technician performs a wide variety of maintenance & plant operating duties for SMC & FedEx Sites. Supporting the FedEx Facility electro-mechanical maintenance effort through intermediate mechanical power transmission and/or fabrication knowledge and basic electrical knowledge of machinery and equipment by completing preventive, corrective, and emergency maintenance and repair on some or all the following: motors, pneumatic tools, conveyor systems, production machines and/or electrical machines, equipment and control systems. Should have the ability to follow diagrams, sketches, operations manuals, manufacturer's instructions, engineering specifications, troubleshoots malfunctions and determines when to elevate troubleshooting issues. A combination of intermediate mechanical, with basic electrical, process control, intermediate electrical with basic mechanical or process control troubleshooting and installation knowledge/skills. The Maintenance I-II-III Technician is guided by a general knowledge of building trades, carpentry, painting, minor electrical, plumbing, mechanical system repairs, plant maintenance, and the use of tools and basic maintenance supplies.
 
Typical Duties and Responsibilities for maintenance technician.
Duties may include, but are not limited to: 
  • Load, unload and transport parts, materials, and equipment. 
  • Operate small hand and power tools/operate a variety of air tools. 
  • Operate power driven equipment – Forklifts, Scissor lifts, etc. 
  • Operate vehicles and equipment including bucket trucks and pick-up trucks, may occasionally operate heavy equipment. 
  • Clean and maintain tools and mechanical equipment. 
  • Pick up litter, trash, leaves & assist in off-line/lost package retrieval.  
  • Perform minor plumbing, electrical and carpentry work. 
  • Respond to emergency calls at any time. 
  • Repair vandalism, ice machines and other appliances. 
  • Welds, burns and solders as needed. 
  • Responds promptly to sort calls, diagnoses the failure, and makes required repairs. 
  • Under minimal supervision, performs a combination of advanced and basic mechanical and electrical preventative maintenance work according to FX standards, ensuring the highest quality of work and that each step is fully executed.  
  • Uses mechanical, electrical or process control troubleshooting techniques to diagnose and repair a combination of basic and intermediate mechanical, electrical and control system problems. This includes, motor windings, relay logic and mechanical requirements. Maintains working knowledge of motors and motor control methods. 
  • Exhibits and encourages behavior that is consistent with the SMC & FedEx risk management program and decreases risk of accident or injury to self, employees, visitors, and their property. 
  • Perform minor maintenance on HVAC, Life/Safety, Electrical/PLC units, etc. 
  • Install/repair or replace light fixtures, ballasts, switches, and outlets.  
  • Repair minor roof leaks, minor concrete/pavement repairs, sidewalks, gutters, and other miscellaneous repairs. 
  • Perform minor building repairs and alterations as needed or directed. 
  • Perform painting duties: sand, caulk, prime and paint. 
  • Troubleshoot, service and perform repairs on streetlights, parking lot lights, production area lighting, signage, bollards, overhead doors, and any other site, building envelope or production area equipment repair or need. 
  • Assist/Assume custodian's duties as related to any maintenance/facility work performed. 
  • Maintains shops and mechanical areas in a clean and safe manner (5S & TPM processes). 
  • Conduct routine maintenance and safety facility inspections as required/directed. 
  • Performs related and other SMC departmental and FedEx Site duties as required.

Physical and Sensory requirements for maintenance Technicians:
  • Must be physically capable of performing heavy manual labor and ability to intermittently sit,  stand, crawl, squat, twist, stoop, bend, kneel, push, or pull. Climbs stairs, ladders, and equipment,  has good sense of balance to work at heights. Some lifting of medium and/or heavy equipment and tools up to 150 lbs. Ability to sit/walk/stand for up to 10 hours per day. 
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriate for job assignments. 
  • Must comply with respiratory program and Specific State OSHA standards.
